When Irv Gordon purchased a brand new Volvo P1800 in 1966, he had no idea it would last for as long as it did - or drive as many miles as it has. Now, 47 years later, Gordon is set to reach 3 million miles in his vehicle, a milestone both he and Volvo Cars of North America are ready to celebrate.
Gordon was helped along by his work commute, which was about 125 miles per day for 10 years, as well as the desire to set out an explore all corners of the country.
"It's not about getting to the 3 million miles; it's about the trips that got me to the 3 million miles," Gordon said. "I never had a goal to get to 1 million, to 2 million. I just enjoyed driving and experiencing life through my Volvo."
According to Media Post News, Gordon is already in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most miles driven by a single owner in a recreational vehicle, and part of the reason he was able to achieve this record was his devotion to proper vehicle maintenance. He has brought the car to the same professional technician for more than 15 years and always took the automobile in for its scheduled maintenance as he racked up the miles.
