Used cars can be a great buy for drivers looking to save money, especially since those who keep up with their scheduled maintenance can lengthen the lifespan of just about any vehicle. With times still tough for many Americans and gas prices on the rise, many are looking for fuel-efficient pre-owned vehicles in order to save some money at the pump.
GreenCarReports.com recently highlighted five models that drivers in the market for a high-MPG used car should consider. The 2004-2009 Toyota Prius topped the list. This is the second-generation version of the Prius, with notable improvements over the original model. With all the space of a mid-size sedan and a whopping 46 MPGs, it's easy to see why the term "Prius" has become ingrained in popular culture.
Yet the Prius isn't the only high-MPG sedan on the market. The Honda Civic Hybrid from 2006-2011 is an equally good choice for drivers who want an eco-friendly model. Honda just came out with the new Civic Hybrid this year, so used versions may be able to be found at a discount. This model offers 41 MPGs and many of the same features as the best-selling Civic.
Other models that made the list include the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and Ford Escape Hybrid.
