Lexus to unveil GS sedan next month

Lexus has been dethroned in the U.S. as the king of luxury sales, with both BMW and Mercedes-Benz surpassing the Toyota nameplate in sales. However, Lexus doesn't look to be going down without a fight.

Next month, Lexus plans to introduce the new version of its GS sedan Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The vehicle will go on sale next year and is expected to go head-to-head with models such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series, reports Automoblog. However, some details about the potential powertrains drivers can expect have already been leaked.

In Europe, it's looking likely that the car will come equipped with a four-cylinder diesel engine, as these have been popular in luxury cars. It's entirely possible that this will be an option on the U.S. model as well, since diesel engines are slowly catching on in America. However, Lexus has also traditionally gone with hybrid models in America, so expect to see green versions of the new GS as well.

Lexus has already revealed a picture of the sedan, which features a sharp and eye-catching front end. What's more interesting about the model, however, may be Lexus' plans for it after it launches. Edmunds Inside Line reports that the company may end up doing a four-door coupe version of the GS to compete with models like the Mercedes CLS and Audi A7.
