With four-cylinder engines more powerful than ever and consumers placing a high premium on fuel economy, many automakers are shifting away from six cylinder engines toward smaller designs. According to Autoweek, Mazda recently announced that its upcoming Mazda6 sedan will not have the option of a six-cylinder engine.
The new Mazda6 isn't due until 2013, but the automaker has already tipped its hand regarding the powertrain that will be under the hood. The news source reports Mazda is shipping the new Mazda6 with its Skyactiv four-cylinder powertrain. Already glimpsed on the CX-5, the four-cylinder engine offers 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque, in addition to direct fuel injection and a highly efficient transmission.
"We believe that the balance of fuel economy and power that Skyactiv offers is what customers want," a Mazda spokesman told the news source.
Sales for the Mazda6 have been great in 2012, with a 93.7 percent increase over 2011.
Whether drivers have a six-cylinder or a four-cylinder, regular vehicle maintenance is important if they want to keep their engine running right. An oil change or car tune up can go a long way toward ensuring that an engine is performing up to par.
