Environmentally friendly vehicles are surging in popularity across the U.S. To accommodate these drivers, many cities around the country are doing their part to make important features and special vehicle maintenance for these cars more accessible. A few locales stand apart as the best for green cars, and Cars.com chose some select urban areas as the top spots.
The "greenest" cities included San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area, including Oakland and San Jose; Portland, Ore.; Honolulu, Hawaii; Lima, Ohio; Monterey-Salinas, Calif.; and San Diego, Calif.
"It is not surprising that California and other West Coast cities top the list with some of the greenest car shoppers," said Joe Wiesenfelder, executive editor of Cars.com. "That part of the country has long led the charge in the green movement. With abundant charging stations, special perks for eco-friendly drivers in some western cities and robust infrastructure, the West Coast is well equipped to cater to the needs of eco-conscious drivers."
Although most of these cities are located on the West Coast, interest in hybrid and eco-friendly cars is up across the country. From 2012 to 2013, there was a 5 percent increase in searches for these vehicles and a 106 percent jump in the number of green vehicles listed on Cars.com.
