The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) is urging families to take the proper precautions for gatherings and travel in order to stay safe this holiday season. Checking different aspects of the home is important, but getting a car tune up before venturing out is also essential. Millions of travelers are set to hit the roads to get to their destinations, and being prepared in case of an emergency can help save a lot of time and effort should something happen.
"While we're all preparing for visitors or planning trips to see friends and loved ones, we can make getting ready for winter weather a part of the preparations," said Leslie Chapman-Henderson, president of FLASH.
Those preparations can include things like shoveling, salting or sanding driveways and scheduling a tune up before heading out on a trip or running holiday errands.
When it comes to staying safe on the road, drivers should make their plans ahead of time and alert others as to their itinerary and how to contact them. It is also a good idea to prepare an emergency kit, complete with a flashlight, blanket, nonperishable food and other assorted tools that may be needed to perform vehicle maintenance.
