Brace for winter driving

October 19, 2012 12:00 AM

With winter right around the corner, it is time for drivers to begin preparing their vehicles for inclement weather. Getting required vehicle maintenance done before temperatures plummet can help cut down costs in the long run and avoid potentially dangerous road situations.

The Detroit Free Press offers a few helpful tips for drivers, including checking air pressure in tires. Changing temperatures affect the pressure, so drivers should be sure to check their wheels and spare tire once they notice the arrival of chilly weather. Checking tread is also important, and transitioning to new or snow tires may be necessary before testing a vehicle on slick, icy roads.

Other elements of a car that should be checked include wiper blades, antifreeze levels and headlights. Any lingering issues that need attention, such as brake repair or an engine check, should be looked at as soon as possible.

While more serious issues should be looked at by a professional when the car goes in for a tune up, drivers can monitor the details of a vehicle in order to stay on top of auto maintenance. According to the Weather Channel, nearly all temperatures affect the roads and driving conditions in some way, so be sure to monitor forecasts and plan accordingly.
