The Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang have always had an interesting rivalry, but as of late it hasn't been much of a competition - the Camaro has been ahead by miles.
In a sharp reverse from the previous year, the Camaro is currently trouncing the Mustang in monthly sales totals. Sales have been down in general for sport and muscle cars, but the Camaro actually increased sales year-on-year. Meanwhile, Ford's Mustang sales fell 35 percent compared to last May.
That meant that the Camaro was able to move 9,451 units last month, compared to 8,931 during the same period of 2010. Ford, meanwhile, only mustered 6,607 Mustangs sold in the past month, after selling more than 10,000 the previous year.
"Although May (Mustang) sales were down, calendar year-to-date sales were only down 2.8 percent," Ford spokesman Octavio Navarro told Edmunds Inside Line. "Our focus, in combination with our other cars, is to continue to grow our car market share."
Edmunds speculates that Ford may have to offer more attractive incentives for drivers to choose the Mustang. The current offer is zero-percent financing along with $500 or a $2,000 rebate.
